How a Pori story is built: five checks before it goes out

Every Pori story comes with a source list. Here is how one 60-second story is built and checked, shown on the bat story from the courtyard at dusk.

Every Pori story comes with a source list. This short clip shows how one of them is built and checked, using the bat story that aired on 9 October.

It starts with a species brief: real species that live in that setting. In the courtyard at dusk that was a common pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus), a large yellow underwing (Noctua pronuba) under the lamp and a garden cross spider (Araneus diadematus) in its web. Each one is drawn to be recognisable, so that what you find outside looks like what you saw in the clip.

Then one fact, with its source. A common pipistrelle weighs around 5 grams, about as much as a small coin, and generally leaves its roost around 20 minutes after sunset (Bat Conservation Trust). One fact per story is enough. The rest is looking.

Every story hides one species in plain sight and reveals it at the end. Nothing is subliminal: everything on screen is meant to be seen.

Sound comes last. Nature sound first, from Wikimedia Commons and credited. Pori's AI voice, always subtitled. And a silent version for viewers who prefer quiet.

Finally, every story gets a field-notes post like this one: the species, one activity outside, and the sources. We're piloting one story a week. Nothing in a story is touched, fed or picked.

Try it outside

Pick one Pori story and go to the kind of place it is set in, with someone from your class or your family: a courtyard at dusk, a pavement crack, the edge of the schoolyard. Find one of the species from its field notes. Look, don't touch, and move on. Then open the story's source list and check: did the story get it right?
